Case Study

One of the main objectives of LiRIL is to understand in depth the literacy acquisition processes of children from non-literate and marginalized backgrounds, and the hurdles they have to face. The quantitative data collection tool would fall short in this regard, and qualitative investigation is necessary. One way of getting a comprehensive picture of this literacy acquisition process is through Case Study of a child from such a background who is known to face difficulties in learning.
Two case studies were undertaken in LiRIL, one of a child from the Kannada site, and one of a child from the Marathi site. In order to understand all the literacy and learning opportunities and experiences of these children, they are observed by the researcher in different contexts and activities over a substantial period of time. This observation helped us build a coherent and realistic account of what happens when a child from a disadvantaged background begins learning to read and write.
