QUEST is one of the recipients of the Early Grade Reading Innovation Challenge Award from Center for Knowledge Societies (CKS) under READ Alliance. The READ Alliance is an initiative aimed at addressing the challenge of early reading inIndia. With support from CKS, QUEST has launched a new 3-year project from March 2015, for introduction of Lipi and Saksham activities in Ashram Schools.  The project will cover 20 Ashram Schools is Palghar and Thane districts, with an expected outreach of over 7000 tribal students. Lipi, a comprehensive literacy program, will be for students of Grade 1 to 3, and Saksham, a literacy remediation program, will be for students of Grade 4 to 7. A unique aspect of this project is creating a cadre of ‘Shikshak Mitras’ – mentors for teachers – who will be equipped with skills to provide onsite support to the Ashram School teachers. To create a reading environment for the students, specially designed library activities will also be conducted in the schools. A rigorous scheme of monitoring and evaluation of the intervention is also built into the project.

In the starting months of the project, Shikshak Mitras will be trained to implement QUEST’s 16-unit graded literacy programme and remediation work.
