What is Grameen Balbhavan?

Grameen Balbhavan is a school plus programme for the students of lower and upper primary schools, to strengthen the foundation of learning. Children from Grade 1 to 4 in Zilla Parishad schools attend the Balbhavan Programme for 2 hours before and after the school time while in Ashram Schools the program is implemented during school hours. The teaching-learning activities are conducted in a child-friendly atmosphere, using specially developed books and materials.

Why Balbhavan?

The quality of education in rural schools is a matter of concern for educators and people engaged with this sector. Several studies have shown that a large percentage of students even after 3-4 years of formal education lack the basic literacy and arithmetic skills. One of the major reasons is the absence of quality classroom interaction in rural schools. We believe that it is possible to build a model of rich classroom interaction within the limitations of the rural reality. The Grameen Balbhavan Programme of QUEST attempts to address this need.

In 2016-17, QUEST’s Grameen Balbhavan Programme is being implemented at 3 centres – one is attached to a Zilla Parishad school, conducted in QUEST's own centre in the village, and 2 in Ashram schools (AS) :

A recent initiative by QUEST is 'School Support Centres', with level-based inputs for students of Grades 4-7, who have not mastered basic literacy and math skills. QUEST team members provide need-based input to children in an accelerated manner so that their basic mathematical and literacy competencies are enhanced and they can cope with their studies on their own. 'Active Library' activities are also conducted in these School Support Centres. At present, these centres are operating in schools in Uchaat and Devgaon.
