Balbhavans in Nandurbar

Nandurbar is a tribal district in the northern Maharashtra. Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) runs a District Initiative in Nandurbar to undertake activities in the areas of Education, Health, Rural Livelihoods and Communities, Arts & Culture and Civil Society & Governance. QUEST partners with SRTT in this initiative, in the education sector. Along with a major project in Dhadgaon, QUEST provides resource support to Jeevan Vidya Trust since July 2009, in running 9 Balbhavans (for Grade 1 to 4) in Nandurbar Block. 

Locations: Girajgaon, Fulsare, Shivpur, Ranale, Jalkhe, Gujarbhavali, Dhirajgaon, Pachorabari, Narayanpur.

The Balmitras are trained by the QUEST team, to use ‘Maze Pustak’ for teaching language. Some activities for teaching basic math operations are also taught to them.

A Supervisor from QUEST is stationed at Nandurbar to monitor and provide regular support to these Balbhavans.

The total outreach in the first year was 624 children. The result of the summative test conducted in March 2011, at the end of one year of intervention is shown in the graphs below:

 

Grade 1 Analysis

A total of 72 children from Grade 1 were administered a post test in March 2011.

It can be seen that 38.9% of students are below 50% while 25% are between 50 – 75% category and 36.1% are between 75 – 100% category.


Grade 2 Analysis

Total number of students appeared for the exam was 110.

Out of 110 students, about 32.7% are below 50% while 67.3% students are above 50%
