Rural students’ project gets selected for National Science Congress
23rd December 2009
This year, three Std. 7 students of a remote village, Dadhre, (in Wada taluka) worked on a Science Project for the Children’s Science Congress. The subject was “Energy-Efficient Lamps for Conservation of Energy”. The project was presented at the Local, Regional and the State level and had now been selected for the National Children’s Science Congress at Ahmedabad on December 27, 2009. The achievement of these students from ZP schools who have overcome many challenges of their rural background is indeed commendable!
The students have conducted a survey of the 36 households in Dadhre village, carried out some experiments and presented their observations. They propose that if all the households change from using tungsten bulbs to CFL, the village will be able to save over Rs. 3000/- per month collectively. When there is no electricity, the villagers use oil lamps. Through a detailed study of all the lamps available in the area, the children have found that using a wick made of old cotton cloth reduces the consumption of kerosene by half. They are currently working on the use of LED lamps for energy conservation. They also want to examine the effects of the structure of the house and colour of walls on the amount of light generated within the house, which can save energy.
To observe one’s surroundings, to spot the problems/issues and to solve them with a scientific approach is a neglected aspect of Science Education. These students are using this approach to find concrete solutions, to present them to the villagers with an appeal to conserve energy. The students are discovering what real education is all about!
